FAQs

What is a pool cover?

Also known as a pool blanket, a pool cover is a protective layer that goes over the entire body of water when it’s not in use. Resting on the water’s surface, it helps reduce evaporation, prevent heat loss and keep out leaves and debris. Solar pool covers, in particular, are great for keeping your pool warm and comfortable in cold weather. We recommend pairing with an NCS pool heating system to maximise your pool temperature.

How do I choose a pool cover?

When selecting a pool cover, consider the following factors:

  • Shape and size: Pool covers need to fit precisely. The size and shape of your pool will impact the cost, as more material will be required for larger or uniquely shaped pools. Have your pool’s plans or blueprints handy to get accurate dimensions or if you need help, we can view your pool with our Nearmap software.
  • Purpose: Consider how, when and why you use your pool and what you want the cover to achieve. Are you prioritising safety, protection from the cold, or minimal cleaning time?
  • Ease of use: If you use your pool often, opt for a pool cover that’s simple to manage. Automatic or retractable covers can save you time and effort, making it easy to cover and uncover your pool without physical strain.
  • Design: Choose a colour and style that complements your outdoor décor.
  • Attachment options: Understand where and how your pool cover can be attached, as this will influence the type of cover needed.
  • Power supply: If you’re considering an automatic pool cover, make sure there is a power source near it. Most pools have pumps and filters close by, so there might already be a power supply for the cover motor. Check if any additional electrical work is required.
  • Climate: Australia’s climate varies significantly by region. Consider the typical weather in your area when selecting a pool cover to ensure it provides suitable insulation.

How long does a pool cover last?

Our high-quality pool covers are highly durable. If you take good care of your cover and use it correctly, it can last up to ten years or longer.

Of course, this depends on the type of cover, how well you maintain it, and how often you use it.

If you start to see your pool cover getting flaky or developing rips and tears, it’s probably time to get a new one.

How do I maintain my pool cover?

Maintaining your pool cover is straightforward. Here are some handy tips:

  • Keep it clean: Regularly remove any debris, water, or snow that collects on your pool cover. This helps prevent the fabric from stretching or rotting.
  • Limit chemical exposure: Don’t leave the cover on the pool when you’ve just added a lot of chemicals, as this can cause the fabric to deteriorate.
  • End-of-season care: When it’s time to take off your pool cover, rinse it thoroughly and let it dry. This will wash off any lingering chemicals and keep it from rotting. You can also use special treatment chemicals or Teflon spray products to add an extra layer of protection.
  • Use a roller: A pool cover roller is a great investment. It keeps your cover safe and neatly stored, making it easy to put on and take off.
  • Store in the shade: If you don’t have a roller, make sure the cover is stored in the shade when not in use. Excessive heat can damage the material and reduce its resistance to chlorine.

How much do pool covers cost?

The cost of pool covers varies based on the size and design of your pool, as well as the material you choose.
